Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot is the latest local leader to stick a finger in the eye of President Trump. He is trying his best to get things back to normal but mayors and governors cannot seem to get on board. Lightfoot was not willing to fall in line. When President Trump recently announced that churches needed to be reopened because they are considered essential, she referred to the idea as “foolish”.
She went on to say that the president did not have the power to override any rules that she had made. Chicago is still maintaining the same lockdown guidelines that were already in place. Three different churches found themselves in hot water over the weekend for being willing to open their doors.
They were all fined for their actions, even as the rest of Chicago was ready to rejoice. The steps that were taken to put these churches in line were a bit much, too. Can you believe that armed police squads were dispatched to send these people back home? We cannot begin to imagine how terrifying this must have been for all of the people who were merely looking to spend their Memorial Day weekend at church.
What about all of the people who decided that they were going to party over the weekend? We didn’t see any armed police officers being sent to these ill advised shindigs. Instead, they were spending their time on these types of frivolous pursuits. Lightfoot does not realize the extent of what she has done.
Not only is she going against the president but she is also showing the people of her city how little they mean to her. When it comes time for her to seek re-election, the religious right in Chicago are not going to be on her side. This is something that she should have thought of it before going against the president’s wishes.
Now, a Black Baptist church has been made to suffer. The south side of Chicago was rejoicing about the new presidential guidelines but they barely had time to squeeze into their pews before the police came charging in. The sermon was not even complete when they started banging on the doors.
Cornerstone Baptist Church was the site of this atrocity. Courtney Lewis is the pastor who was so rudely interrupted. The police may have been denied entry but that was not the end of the story. A representative from Lightfoot’s office was also present for this intrusion.
The left is now using the COVID-19 outbreak as their excuse to put a stop to American churches. The war against the religious right has been waged and we are sad to see it. People are looking to a higher power for any form of solace during this moment in time. The quarantine era is causing people to feel lost, sad and alone.
They are not going to be able to turn to the churches that they rely on during moments like these. Unfortunately, they have the power hungry governors and mayors who are being allowed to make these decisions to thank for it. There’s no end to these battles in sight, either. The president can issue any guidelines he wants but that won’t make governors and mayors listen to them.
That’s what he gets for empowering the wrong people. He thought that he could allow these local leaders to make the decisions that are most necessary but nothing could have been further from the truth. How long is the religious right going to be made to suffer?
Church assaults are now a part of everyday life for American citizens. If this our “new normal”, changes need to be made before it is too late. It is only a matter of time before one of these officers decides to overstep their boundaries even further. No one should be willing to wait for a tragedy to take place before speaking out about this.
